It’s time for a reality check on the state of the modern workplace. The millennials are already here, and the Gen Z-ers are hot on their heels. Run for your lives! No, I’m kidding. We’re all actually really good workers.
But according to our research, change is inevitable. To prepare yourself for working with a generationally-diverse population, here are a few key characteristics of the classic millennial manager that will give you some insight into their work habits.
Working 40 hours a week is about as popular as an Anthony Michael Hall character in an ’80s movie. Only 12% of our survey respondents indicated that they stick to the 40-hour work week, and the majority (41%) said they typically work 40-50 hours.
2. They’ll be working remotely
Of the more than 1,000 millennial managers we surveyed, 89% indicated that they’d prefer to work from home at least one day per week, and 36% would increase that number to three or more days.
3. They set their own hours
Work/life balance is crucial to millennial employees, but they achieve that balance differently than previous generations. Instead of shutting down their laptops at 5 p.m. and not thinking about work until 9 a.m. the following morning, millennial employees have adopted a more fluid approach to work/life balance. It’s not uncommon for a millennial worker to take a few hours off in the middle of the day, and then make up the time at night, or even on a weekend. The emphasis is more on the quality of work and of life than on the quantity of time spent on either.
Here’s my unsolicited advice for working in a multi-generational workplace: use technology to bridge the gaps. Working remotely? Use video conferencing tools and chat apps to keep in contact with your teammates. Need to spend a little extra time on a project? Save it to the cloud and access it from a coffee shop on Sunday morning. Have a sixth-grade recorder concert to attend at 2 p.m.? Ask your spouse to live stream it. (Actually, maybe just review the pictures afterward. That sounds brutal.)
My point is, there are so many great tools out there. Use them to the best of their ability and go live your life.
