What is an Intranet Packaged Solution?

According to Gartner, "Modern intranets supporting digital workplace strategies require a comprehensive and cohesive set of platforms and applications that are difficult for application leaders to build or assemble themselves. Intranet packaged solutions (IPS) bring the technologies together to alleviate this problem while letting business owners, such as communications and HR leaders, manage and monitor intranets themselves. Meanwhile, the intranet and its role is changing rapidly.

An IPS is an off-the-shelf assembly of technologies enabling organizations to address needs most commonly associated with intranets, including employee engagement and communications, business and IT service and self-service, application access and aggregation, content and knowledge management, and collaboration.

Intranets play an increasingly crucial role advancing the digital workplace strategy, not only as a point of access to important business information and services, but also as a common substrate of technologies that unify and harmonize the digital experience (see Table 1). As such, for some companies the IPS will serve both as a set of business applications, and as a platform geared toward orchestrating and improving employee experience across many applications."

Key Findings from the Report

  • "The intranet has a central role in improving employee experience, supporting and engaging employees through the pandemic and facilitating a more flexible future of work.
  • Organizations recognize the intranet’s various, distinct purposes, including employee engagement, employee services, application aggregation and access, knowledge management and collaboration. This is because each has its own business stakeholder, its own goals and motivations, its own measures of success.
  • Intranets provide a common foundation of services that span the broader digital workplace, providing a platform to harmonize, integrate and augment digital workplace applications.

  • A traditional destination style intranet website is ill-equipped to support the above requirements. A modern intranet is needed, one that provides its services to both frontline and office workers in whatever context, device or application happens to be in front of them. It must provide push and pull information and services. It must offer a primary front door and many side doors for entry."
